You've seen the photos. A classroom gathered around an incubator, a tiny crack appearing in a shell, and twenty-some faces realizing — all at once — that the chick they've been watching for three weeks is really, truly here. You want that for your students.
Then reality taps you on the shoulder: my budget.
Here's the good news. A classroom hatching program is one of the most fundable experiences in New Jersey education — because it isn't a novelty. It's a 28-day, standards-aligned life-science unit (life cycles, growth and development, heredity, observation and data practices) that arrives with a real vendor, a real invoice, and paperwork your business office already knows how to process. Our program, Hatch a Lovely Chick™, costs $479 per classroom setup, all-in — delivery, setup, 12 fertilized eggs, all equipment and supplies, guidance throughout, and pickup. Here are the four routes NJ teachers actually use to pay for it.

Route 1: A purchase order (the most common way)
If your district has any instructional budget at all, a purchase order is usually the simplest path — and it's how multiple NJ schools have already paid for this program. No credit card. No teacher paying out of pocket and hoping for reimbursement.
- Ask us for a quote. Message us with your school name and how many classrooms — we'll send a written quote for your business office.
- Hand your business office our vendor information. The Lovely Hen is a registered New Jersey vendor: Lovely Hen LLC, NJSTART Vendor ID V00107842, Business Registration active, W-9 and Business Registration Certificate available on request. The full vendor block is on our For Schools page — built exactly for this moment.
- Your district issues the PO. Once we have the purchase order number, your date is held.
- We deliver, set up, and support your class for the full 28 days.
- We invoice against the PO — after delivery, or per your district's preference. Your invoice matches your PO exactly, so payment doesn't stall.
That's it. If you're a school secretary or business-office staffer reading this: we are already set up the way you need vendors to be set up. One call or message and the packet is in your inbox.
Route 2: An NJEA PEP grant
The New Jersey Education Association's PEP grants (Public Education Partnership) exist to fund exactly this kind of program — the kind a classroom budget can't always stretch to but students never forget.
How it works, honestly:
- The application goes through your local association — your local president or PEP/PRIDE chair submits it through NJEA. We can't apply for you, and no one can promise you an approval; that's NJEA's decision.
- Approval takes time — plan on weeks, not days. If you're dreaming of a spring hatch, the moment to start the conversation with your local association is now.
- Our part is painless. We'll supply the quote, a one-page program summary (price, 12 eggs, 28 days, standards alignment), and every vendor document your association needs. Ask us for the funding packet and it's yours.
Teachers have powerful stories for grant applications: this is screen-free, hands-on science that covers life cycles, embryology, responsibility, and empathy in one continuous, living unit. Use that language — it's true, and it's what these grants are for.
Route 3: PTA/PTO and building funds
Many schools fund one setup per grade level through the PTA/PTO or a building-level fund. It's an easy yes for parent groups: a visible, joyful, educational experience that every child in the grade shares — and that families hear about at the dinner table for a month.
Route 4: Book classrooms together and save
If your grade level (or your whole hallway) wants in, booking 3 or more setups saves $50 per setup. Three third-grade classrooms hatching the same week is also, quietly, a scheduling dream: shared excitement, shared hallway displays, and one delivery day.
A quick word about timing
Hatch dates are booked first come, first served, and spring — peak hatching season in every sense — fills early. Funding routes move at different speeds: a PO can take days, a PEP grant can take weeks. Starting the paperwork early is the whole secret.
